Description

The Sabah Art Gallery is a state art gallery which was established in 1984. It was placed under the administration of the Sabah Sports and Cultural Board and is temporarily housed in the Science Centre of the Sabah Museum which is under the same ministry; i.e. the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. It occupies a space of 11,980 square feet on the first floor of the Science Centre for exhibition, office and storing purposes. The objectives of the gallery are to collect, store, preserve, interpret and exhibit both local and foreign works of art. It strives to increase the quantity and uplift the quality of art works and promote the appreciation of art in the state. The gallery is managed by a skeleton staff, comprising a director, an assistant clerk, two typists, a messenger, five gallery attendants and two cleaners. To achieve its objectives the gallery organizes monthly exhibitions, weekly workshops occasional seminars, various competitions and so on.

    Location

    The gallery is located on the first floor of the Science Centre (second building) of the Sabah Museum, off the Penampang Road.

    Collection

    The gallery has so far acquired over 1,500 pieces of art works in its permanent collection in the form of paintings, carvings, sculptures, installations and so on, mostly by local artists.

    Galleries

    To showcase the gallery’s various thematic exhibitions the limited space on the first floor of the Science Centre is partitioned into four small galleries where the monthly, quarterly and permanent exhibitions are staged.

    Exhibition

    The gallery usually planned and showcased more than twelve exhibitions annually in which more than half of them are of annual activities. The exhibitions are aimed at featuring and introducing new works, new faces of artists, new themes and new approaches in the visual art especially in the local context for educational and promotional purposes.
